Delegation or DIY

Delegation or DIY?

When it comes to jobs such as putting together flat-pack furniture or changing a tyre, these are tasks that can be completed relatively easily with a bit of instruction to follow. But would you consider the same ‘do it yourself’ approach with your brand and how your business is perceived?

As tempting as it might be to put together a logo or flyer in word processing software or trying your hand at some design programs – in essence, you’re costing yourself time that could be utilised elsewhere. A graphic designer knows how to communicate your products/services to potential customers well, as they understand the language of colour, imagery and composition and the best way to combine these elements efficiently.

‘Do what you do best, delegate the rest!’

Insight & ideas

Not only are you taking advantage of a graphic designer’s practical skills, you are able to bounce ideas around with them. Fresh ideas and insights are invaluable, a designer can act as a ‘test run’ before you reveal your product/service to the public. Designers will listen and work with you to present your business in the best possible way to your target audience and offer suggestions that perhaps never crossed your mind!

Websites & Print Prep

Press-ready print design unfortunately isn’t as easy as ‘file > print’ when it comes to marketing material. When a designer compiles a brochure, leaflet, flyer or business card for you, there are many technical elements that are considered to ensure it is printed to the highest quality, these include: bleed, crops, guttering, pagination and colour matching (to name a few). This is also relevant with website design, to be sure you’re not left behind by technology, you need to be sure your website works well on all devices (mobile, tablet, laptop, desktop, large screens) and isn’t slow to load. Website designers will take care of this, making sure your website is responsive and images are web optimised.

Consultation

There is no shame in budgeting if you are a start-up. If your budget doesn’t have much room for a designer to conceptualise an idea from scratch and you feel you’re pretty savvy using DIY platforms, (but second-guessing your design skills) you can seek the opinion of a skilled creative designer for their opinion, to consult and guide you in the right direction of what would work best and ultimately benefit your business in the long run.
